This Cardiac First Response – Community Level course was developed by PHECC, the Pre- Hospital Emergency Care Council, as a national standard for anyone who has to deal with a heart attack, stroke or choking. A Cardiac First Responder can play a vital role in keeping a person alive until they receive expert medical assistance. Equally CPR and an AED are important links in the chain of survival.

    Description

    Course Content

    • Recognise the signs and symptoms of the four major emergencies:
      • Heart attack
      • Stroke
      • Cardiac arrest
      • Foreign body airway obstruction
    • Recovery position
    • When it is appropriate to use the AED machine
    • Correct operation and use of the AED machine
    • Basic techniques of CPR (Adult/Child/Infant)
    • Barrier devices in CPR
    • Choking – conscious and unconscious
    • Aspirin administration for heath attack
    • Stroke
    • Skills practice

    Assessment

    There is no formal exam however there is continuous assessment throughout the course so full participation in both individual and group exercises is required in order to be considered competent by the Instructor and receive certification.

    Accreditation & Certification

    Accredited by the Pre Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC). PHECC is a statutory agency and the regulator for all pre hospital emergency medical care in Ireland.

    Certificate is valid for 2 years.
